Community Programs
AWF has been a vital presence in Allegheny West for over 35 years. With two locations—one for administration and housing, and the other to serve as a community center—we provide a range of facilities and services aimed at bettering the community and residents.
We also operate in close partnership with a strong core of nonprofit, corporate and governmental entities, in conjunction with strong participation and input from community residents, to ensure needed services and amenities are readily available in our community.
Our Community Resources Center, located at 2330 W. Allegheny Ave., serves as our physical link to community residents. There, we offer a range of services and programs for local youth and adults, including computer training and job training and skills development programs, which include sessions on resume writing and job interview and readiness skills.
In partnership with state Senator Shirley Kitchen, PNC Bank, Wachovia and other Philadelphia community development corporations, AWF offers the Homebuyers Club, a 10-class homebuyer’s education program.
We also sponsor the Share Emergency Food Program, a weekly food giveaway for senior citizens in need, youth programming, health education workshops and the LIHEAP heating assistance program.
Allegheny West is also home to many strong cultural arts programs, including a mural program in local elementary schools, coordinated by the Mural Arts Program, which sponsors beautification projects throughout the neighborhood.
Community Day: Each year AWF, in partnership with local civic groups, the merchant’s association, private corporations and city subsidiaries, sponsors a “Community Day” celebration on North 22nd Street. The event is generally held in early summer and brings large numbers of people onto the commercial corridor for a day of fun and community service.
Last year, the Timberland Community Builders Tour selected sites in the Allegheny West community for select service projects.
Partnerships between The Allegheny West Foundation, Sneaker Villa, City of Philadelphia, and Timberland produced a daylong community service event that provided activities for over 500 community residents and youth.
The community service projects that were undertaken included:
- 29th & Chalmers Field: Community Events, planting and greening, mural project, painting of community center, basketball courts and community park benches
- 22nd & Lehigh: Painting of a mural, planting barrel planters for 20 residents, community cleanup activities
- 2900 Bonsall Project: Cleaning, fencing and greening of 19 vacant lots
