MEET OUR COMMUNITY > Civic Organizations
Allegheny West is fortunate to have a strong foundation of civic groups, as well as businesses, other organizations and individuals who remain active in our community. AWF actively seeks out such organizations and individuals to form partnerships to strengthen our community.
We have been active in community planning with a number of civic groups:
- Chalmers Park Gardeners: An organized gardening effort for the Chalmer’s Park Garden at 28th and Cambria streets.
- Community Action Group: A grassroots community organization working with the neighborhood by spearheading community cleanup days in conjunction with Philadelphia More Beautiful; organizing community events such as information meetings, flea markets, trips and festivals; working with senior citizens to provide assistance; and developing culturally based youth programming.
- RAH Civic Association: A group that sponsors fundraising bingo games, skating parties, carnivals, youth sports associations, flea markets, annual Unity Day festival, community cleanup efforts, town watch, community patrols and much more.
- Forgotten Blocks: The leadership group that emerged from the residents of the "Forgotten Blocks", who successfully lobbied the city and a local church to keep their homes during the 1970s, continues to provide significant leadership in securing resources through the city as part of the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative (NTI).
- North Penn Civic Association: A group that provides alternatives to street life for youth including after-school programming, recreational activities, computer training, mentoring, tutoring, problem solving and cooperative learning.
- Philadelphia Community Civic Organization (PCCO): A group that provides services for homeless single parents and community programs including homeownership classes, drug and alcohol transitional living, job training and readiness, physical fitness, health awareness, parenting, education, both mentors and literacy, and senior citizen assistance.
- Tioga United: A nonprofit community organization of concerned residents whose mission is to rebuild the Tioga/Nicetown community through a community design collaborative, neighborhood cleanup, using Hip-Hop and the Hip-Hop community as a positive cultural asset and building tool, organizing crime prevention efforts and economic development.
- Woodstock Civic Association: A group that offers hot meals, the Seasoned Citizens Program, an after school program and a summer camp for youth.
